Here’s a guide to the main trails in Petra, detailing what you can expect along each route.
     

    The Main Trail

    The Main Trail is the most well-traveled path in Petra, leading visitors from the entrance through the Siq to the Treasury, and then continuing past many of the city’s major monuments.

    - Starting Point: Petra Visitor Center
    - Length: Approximately 4 km (round trip)
    - Key Highlights:
      - The Siq: This 1.2 km narrow gorge serves as the dramatic entrance to Petra. Along the way, you’ll see ancient water channels, carvings, and the remains of the arch that once marked the entrance.
      - The Treasury (Al-Khazneh): This stunning façade is the first major monument you encounter. It’s best viewed in the morning light.
      - Street of Facades: Continuing past the Treasury, this street is lined with impressive tombs and burial chambers.
      - The Theatre: A Nabataean-built theatre that could seat up to 8,500 people, showcasing the city’s Roman influences.
      - Royal Tombs: These are larger tombs cut into the cliffs, providing insight into the Nabataean’s burial practices.
    - Difficulty: Easy to moderate, mostly flat with some uneven surfaces.
     

    The Monastery Trail (Ad-Deir Trail)

    This trail leads to one of Petra’s most impressive monuments, the Monastery, which is less visited but equally spectacular as the Treasury.

    - Starting Point: Near the Basin Restaurant
    - Length: Approximately 8 km (round trip)
    - Key Highlights:
      - The Basin: A good place to rest and have a meal before starting the hike.
      - 800 Steps: The trail involves climbing around 800 rock-cut steps. The path is steep and can be strenuous, but there are small stalls along the way selling refreshments and souvenirs.
      - The Monastery (Ad-Deir): This massive structure is similar in style to the Treasury but larger. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

    The High Place of Sacrifice Trail

    - Key Highlights:
      - Theatre: Start your climb near the ancient theatre.
      - Ascent: The trail involves a steep climb with well-defined steps and switchbacks.

    The Al-Khubtha Trail

    This less-known trail offers some of the best views of the Treasury from above and takes you through a quieter part of Petra.

    - Starting Point: Near the Royal Tombs
    - Length: Approximately 4 km (round trip)
    - Key Highlights:
      - Royal Tombs: The trail starts with a visit to the Royal Tombs.
      - Ascent: A steep climb up a well-marked path leading to the top of the cliff.
      - Treasury Overlook: The highlight of this trail is the spectacular view of the Treasury from above, an excellent spot for photography.
      - Caves and Rock Formations: Along the way, you’ll pass various caves and interesting rock formations.

    The Little Petra Trail (Siq al-Barid)

    Little Petra, also known as Siq al-Barid, is a smaller version of Petra and is often less crowded, offering a more peaceful exploration.

    - Starting Point: Little Petra entrance, about 14 km from Petra’s main entrance
    - Length: Approximately 2 km (round trip)

      - Siq al-Barid: Similar to Petra’s Siq but smaller and less crowded.
